Here’s A Recap of our AI in CVD Mini-Symposium


Specialists in cardiothoracic surgery, artificial intelligence, and machine learning gathered at the “AI in Cardiovascular Disease” mini-symposium on Sept. 12 to discuss the world’s leading cause of death. 

Presentations focused on utilizing AI to help create more accurate biomarkers for CVD diagnosis, understanding new CVD risks and moving the use of multi-modal AI from testing to clinical implementation. 

Speakers included AI.Health’s cutting-edge researchers, including Dr. Carlo De Cecco, Dr. Marly van Assen and Executive Director Dr. Anant Madabhushi. 

Emory University undergraduate student Yan Yang (‘27) said the event will aid her research in data analysis within cardiology. She currently works under the tutelage of Dr. van Assen studying how to improve real-risk assessment and develop new metrics that can aid in achieving this. 

“As an undergraduate student that is doing some data analysis research in cardiology, I think today's symposium was really helpful for me to understand what kind of research is in the field… and how it [the research presented at the event] can potentially apply to AI and future work,” she stated. 

Speaker and cardio-oncologist Dr. Avrip Guha discussed how cardiology, prostate cancer and AI intersect. 

“Prostate cancer-related imaging can be utilized for AI-based prediction of cardiovascular disease risk,” he said. “Some blood markers of patients with prostate cancer can be utilized to see who is at risk of developing advanced, metastatic prostate cancer if they have cardiovascular disease.”  

Dr. Guha also discussed how other AI tools, such as radiomics, deep learning and large language models, have assisted in learning more about patients with or at risk of developing cardiovascular disease. 

AI.Health’s next symposium on artificial intelligence and healthcare will take place Nov. 12 -13.
