Third AI.Health Symposium Recap
Emory Empathetic AI for Health Institute (AI.Health) hosted its third annual “AI for Health” symposium on December 2nd and 3rd. The symposium featured panels and sessions on a variety of topics, including AI in pediatrics, the integration of AI into clinical scribing, and how AI is changing medical education.
Day 1 began with a welcome message from Dean Dr. Sandra Wong, CEO of Emory Healthcare, Dr. Joon Lee, and AI.Health Executive Director Dr. Anant Madabhushi. The first session detailed real-time usage of clinical AI and its capabilities to speed up diagnosis time by analyzing data as it comes in. Then attendees heard from a group of panelists, who discussed the successful implementation of translation tools to provide real-time speech-to-text and decrease lengthy appointment times for both the patient and the doctor. Attendees also heard from one of our sponsors, Picture Health’s CEO Trishan Arul, who described how this technology is crucial to creating AI imaging biomarker technologies.
The first day of the symposium also featured a keynote address from Vivek Natarajan about how his research at Google’s DeepMind stands at the integration of AI and healthcare.
After lunch, attendees jumped into session 2, “Scribes and Clinical Interaction with AI.”
Attendee Court Robertson found the session revolutionary and connected it with his background as a former Wellstar employee. He detailed how the speakers explained the manner in which automated scribing can be a highly useful tool in the doctor’s office.
“It’s a cool procedure where the doctor uses their phone to connect directly with the patient,” said Robertson. “The doctor asks if they can converse without typing, and the patient agrees. The doctor then activates an app that listens and takes notes of the diagnosis as they speak.”
As day 1 came to a close, guests entered into the last panel discussion covering how AI can both help and hinder medical education. To close, attendees heard four lightning round presentations from Dr. Germán Corredor Prada, Dr. Mohammadhadi Khorram, Dr. Bhakti Baheti and Dr. Sudeshna Das.
Day 2 kicked off early with session 4, covering pediatrics and AI. Guests heard from various Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) specialists, including oncologist Dr. Tobey MacDonald and hospitalist Dr. Naveen Mathu.
Following the session, CHOA’s Chief Information Officer Jeremy Meller and Emory University’s Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Dr. Nabile Safdar participated in a fireside chat regarding the difficulties in choosing the most beneficial AI program to implement and the hurdles that come with implementation.
Attendee Colleen Mosely, CHOA’s AI Governance and Literacy Manager, said the session provided a reminder that collaboration is imperative in overcoming those hurdles in the face of unfamiliar new technology.
“I think just knowing that other places are in the same struggle helps validate the challenges of implementing new AI tools,” she said. “Processes are hard, getting a new vendor is hard, changing people’s minds and the way they think is hard. Recognizing that it is hard, and that it's not just you that is struggling, others are too.”
After a short coffee break, attendees heard from the second keynote speaker, Paul Thompson Director of the ENGIMA consortium. He shared the purpose and goals of the collaborative initiative of researchers in imaging genomics. During the final session, speakers discussed the future of AI and how it will transform healthcare.
The symposium provided attendees with new knowledge and forged innovative pathways for navigating a changing world, as new AI technology progresses and becomes more commonplace in both the clinical and research spheres.
